Lithops, also known as \u201cliving stones\u201d, are among the most striking succulents for a collection at home. They look like small pebbles, but beneath the surface lies a remarkably well-adapted plant that has learnt to survive in dry environments. It is precisely this adaptation that explains why lithops care<\/strong>\u00a0is quite different from caring for other indoor plants.<\/p>\n

The most important thing to remember is simple: lithops do not like frequent watering. With plenty of light, excellent drainage and patience during their growth phases, they can stay healthy for many years.<\/p>\n

What Lithops Are and How They Grow<\/h2>\n

The Lithops<\/em> genus of succulents comes mainly from southern Africa. Each plant usually consists of a pair of fleshy leaves joined at the base, with a narrow slit in the centre. From there the flower appears and, later, the new pair of leaves.<\/p>\n

In shops you will often come across names such as lithops<\/strong>, living stones<\/strong> or pebble plants<\/strong>. Although they look like stones, they are living plants that follow a distinctive annual cycle. They do not grow continuously in the way an ordinary pot plant does.<\/p>\n

Usually, from late summer into autumn, their flower may appear, often white or yellow. In winter and early spring, the old pair of leaves gradually starts to shrivel. Inside it a new pair forms, drawing on the water and nutrient reserves of the old leaves.<\/p>\n

This leaf-change period is the most critical moment in lithops care. If you water while the plant is still absorbing its old leaves, the risk of rot rises considerably.<\/p>\n

Light: Where to Place Your Lithops<\/h2>\n

Lithops need plenty of light to keep a compact shape and healthy colour. A very bright window, ideally with gentle morning sun, is usually a good choice at home.<\/p>\n

Light Indoors<\/h3>\n

Place the pot near an east-, south-east- or south-facing window. In a very dark room the plant can stretch, lose its characteristic low, rounded shape or become weaker.<\/p>\n

If your lithops sits behind glass in strong summer sun, especially on a south- or west-facing balcony, it is best to protect it during the hottest midday hours. A thin white curtain or a spot in bright shade helps prevent scorching.<\/p>\n

Light on a Balcony or Patio<\/h3>\n

In most parts of Greece, lithops can go outdoors in spring and autumn, as long as they are protected from prolonged rain. On the islands, in coastal areas and in the mild-wintered south, growing them outside is only possible in a covered spot where the soil does not get soaked.<\/p>\n

In mountainous, northern or inland areas with frost, move the plants to a bright, sheltered place before temperatures drop significantly. Damp combined with cold is far more dangerous than a short spell of dry, cool weather.<\/p>\n

Soil and Pot for Good Drainage<\/h2>\n

The right potting mix is the foundation of a healthy lithops. The plant needs soil that drains quickly and does not hold water around the roots. Ordinary heavy compost for indoor plants is usually not suitable on its own.<\/p>\n

For beginners, a practical solution is a ready-made cactus and succulent mix, improved with mineral materials such as perlite, pumice, grit or coarse horticultural sand. The aim is a mix that stays loose and lets water drain away quickly.<\/p>\n

Which Pot Is Suitable<\/h3>\n

Choose a pot with a drainage hole. The hole is essential, as water left at the bottom can quickly cause rot. A terracotta pot helps the mix dry out faster, but a plastic pot also works well if the soil is free-draining and you water carefully.<\/p>\n
